CD-r/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Cue Records, 2016

I must say I was quite annoyed when I found out this album by established German synthesist Peter Mergener was released in physical form as a CD-R and not as a factory-pressed disc as should have been. The 53-minute “Robotic Instinct” sees Peter return to the fine style executed on his first few solo releases, coming to the surface on “Operation Check” most notably. Throughout the full contemporary sounding recording, warm synthetic sounds and typical Mergener sequencing shake hands while keeping them thematically focussed on computerization, automation, and hi-tech.

It all starts out with the quite epic 12-minute “Rise of Machines” creating just the right atmosphere. There are a few upbeat tracks leaning towards Kraftwerk such as “Man vs. Machine” along with more descriptive mood tracks turning towards the darker side of the matter like “Panic Room”,“Human line android” and the strong title track rounding out the recording.

If early Peter Mergener music is part of your collection this album should become part of it as well.
