Darker, haunting, and often slightly ominous atmospheres continue to be the core and sonic footprint of Phobos’ music, aka UK artist David Thompson, who hereby presents his audience with another live recording, this time made at the Awakenings festival in May 2025. Mysterious semblances and dense soundwaves already creep in on the opening track. The ambient textures and intense soundscapes evolve and shapeshift gradually on the 72-minute/seven-part “Phenomenon” as a traveler who slowly travels through barren, desolate landscapes, dark spaces, and ghostly plains. The first two parts, together some 30 minutes, already make up a fascinating ride to an off-world reality that’s extended upon on the following tracks. On the latter, strange life forms and uncommon climatic conditions keep passing by and keep the listener’s attention. Only in the fifth and seventh parts, a snippet of structure/rhythm shows up briefly before being immersive once more in spaced-out atmospherics. The recording signs off with the 10-minute “Locked Out”, which sounds redundant to my ears due to its slightly sequenced/melodic sound design. |
