Psychetropic – 23

CD-r/Digital Download, Microrelease, 2025

Psychetropic is one of the projects of Arizona-based musician Todd Fletcher, in which he focuses on more ambient techno-style music. The main thing Mr Fletcher remembers about making that album was his 3 kids (all under 10 at the time) went nuts when he played the track “The Space Age”: they’d come in the studio and start dancing when he played it.

The album features eight longer instrumental tracks in which both the distinctive sound design and the supporting low basses and beats stand out alongside the sometimes slightly tribal-like percussion. There are a few melody lines to be found in the pieces, but sometimes a vague Steve Roach feel, which may be related to the instruments used (despite the fact that the musical approach is very idiosyncratic). In terms of sound, the disc (which lasts 54:30 rather than 48:46 as stated on the cover) sounds perfect in any case.
