“Knutsford in May” captures a concert of Goddard, Dinsdale and Houghton live on stage, the one they did in May 1996 at Jodrell Bank Space Research Centre in Cheshire, UK. The usual retro-TD aural suspects (vintage synths, prog e-guitar) are shown-off, but somehow the five improvised tracks aren’t always that consistent and enchanting as I had hoped for. An exception is the 23-minute “Skeletope”: great pumping seqencers and swirling retro pads, but it is Houghton’s guitar work that couldn’t really grab me that much. In the end, “Knutsford in May” is a special take on the Berliner School with a lot of experimentation thrown in along the way. |
