Redshift’s third album, “Down Time” -an entire studio production- was presented and performed live in April 1999 during the Alpha Centauri Festival in Huizen, The Netherlands. It comes in an elaborate sleeve that once again contains very little information apart from a few scribbled track titles. Musically, Mark once again indulged himself on his large analogue system, using not only lots of fat, pumping sequencers from the seventies, but also sounds that fit seamlessly with TD’s albums “Phaedra”, Stratosphere”, and “Rubycon”. Redshift’s electronic rock still sounds punchy (an approach strongly reminiscent of Mark’s earlier solo albums) and straightforward, despite the fact that some experimentation seems to be making its way in. I’d say the overall sound of the 60-minute release is a tad more challenging, deep, slightly menacing (“Ultranaut”, “High Noon”), along with a couple of gothic vibes. There are a few contributions on electric guitar, but still striking are the frequently used analogue sounds, which in themselves are quite ominous, dark, and almost spooky. |
