Redshift – Halo

CD/Digital Download, Distant Sun, 2002

“Halo” is an entirely studio-based recording performed solely by Mark Shreeve that, compared to “Siren”, is significantly more subdued in character. This time around, Redshift’s music reveals more melancholic as well as darker sensibilities.  Nevertheless, it contains equally fine compositions with the same vintage sounds.

Once again, Mr. Shreeve succeeds in creating beautiful atmospheres, occasionally punctuated by melodic passages. Take the enchanting Rhodes piano featured on “Rhode Kill”, for example, which makes a more emphatic appearance later in the seventh piece. On the third track, “Panzer”, the vintage music sparkles with tasty sequencer loops, guitar, and beautiful choral sounds, before becoming more subdued in the subsequent tracks.

The 14-minute title piece is compelling and steadily evolving, its minimalist sound design of fat sounds and emotive choir pads reminding me slightly of Schulze’s “Crystal Lake”. It is for sure one of the disc’s highlights. Tracks 7–9 also turn out to be spherical in nature. “Rise” and “Shine” both have an experimental slant in the first part, and while the final track, “Leaving” kicks ass with some ethereal, retro-classical beauty. Nice going, Mark!
