By the time Mark Shreeve started making up his mind for and shaping the outcome of the studio release “Oblivion”, the overall sound of the vintage Berlin School project had grown occasionally darker and more ominous. A pleasant organic flow can be discerned throughout the full album, which presents all pieces in one continuous go. Just dig the raw, subdued intensity of the realm found on the strong title piece kicking things off. After that, the music sets off into psychedelic-flavoured territory, addressing lovely introspective spheres shining through the emotive soundscapes. Overall, a deep, spacious sound is prominent rather than complex sequences and sharp dynamics. A special note goes out to the slow pulsating “Runes”, an almost 15-minute gothic exercise with some nice atmospheric Moog sequencing. I’d say this 53-minute journey demands more focused listening to get to the true nature and bottom of what Redshift’s sonic magic is all about. Nice one, Mark. |
