Redshift – Siren
CD/Digital Download, Distant Sun, 2002

Redshift’s “Siren” came out simultaneously with “Halo”, both were presented at The Hampshire Jam 2. It includes an hour-long rendition of their splashy concert that Mark Shreeve & co put down during their performance at the 6th Alpha Centauri festival in April ’99, where Mark’s massive Moog modular synthesizer was at the centre of the stage.

Those who love fat analogue sounds, thudding basslines, and the classic Berlin school / vintage TD-style in particular will quickly fall like a log for the once again impressive (especially low) sequencers and mellotron sounds, occasionally complemented by atmospheric guitar work, all united in well-crafted compositions. Personally, I found the transition to a bouncy dance-like sequence after 4 minutes in “Bombers in the Desert” one of the highlights of the disc, but the other pieces also stick together, tantalizing, dynamic, and varied.

Note: For the newer version of the download album, there is an extra track included (space restrictions on CDs prevented this on the original release). It is a live version of the track “Mania,” which appeared on the “Down Time” album.

Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars.
