I confess I somewhat gave up on on Mr Schroeder after the uninspired outcome of his previous two releases. Well, on his 2020-release “C’est magique” -a sound excursion into the depths of magic- the Aachen-based composer turns up the ambient chill-out avenue.
Despite my low expectations Robert seems back on track with the laid-back, feel good music on this 60-minute recording. I feel the opening (title)piece is the actually the only weak flaw here with its flat-out soft sax solo sound and spoken female voice. Contrary to that the other seven tracks feature a much more appealing and keen sound design –reflecting nicely occasionally on on Schroeder’s classic albums now and then- bathening in spaciousness and lushness while percussion spices things up occasionally.
Things even shift into fluid motion on the excellent “Black Magic” as well as on “Glowing Energy”, both containing the most upfront & rhythmic-driven electronic atmospheres of “C’est magique”. The aformentioned leaves me curious if Robert will be able to prologue this kind of quality on forthcoming releases.
