Having followed Mr. Schroeder’s album output over the past decade, I wasn’t expecting any surprises from “Evolution” – and, once again, it delivers none. Spanning 63 minutes and comprising nine tracks, the album ranges from meandering soundscapes to more up-tempo passages. “Evolution” offers a familiar and recognisable blend of sequencer patterns, atmospheric ambient pads, and dreamy, melancholic melodies. In this respect, the press release’s description of the album as “another step further into the deep realms of electronic soundscapes” seems entirely appropriate. Featuring a fair share of preset sounds, the album unfolds as an immersive journey through hypnotic, layered compositions, rich in atmospheric textures, pleasant melodies, and soothing synthesiser music. As expected, the musical legacies of Klaus Schulze, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Tangerine Dream are never far away. Ultimately, “Evolution” once again fails to break new ground, but it offers a familiar and comforting (rather chill-out) listening experience for fans of classic Berlin School and melodic electronic music in general. |
