Ron Boots & Gert Emmens  – One Night at Blackrock Station
CD/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Groove Unlimited, 2021

After his second collaboration with Synth.NL, Ron Boots now joins forces with another powerhouse electronic composer from The Netherlands: Gert Emmens. It’s no surprise lots of dynamics get in the works when those two get together. After creating various basic tracks in Ron’s well-equipped studio, a selection from these was made followed by exchanging audio files through the net with Gert and Ron enriching and extending them individually in their own studios. This ended with a final meet-up to put the icing on the cake before Ron started mastering the full outcome.

Well, “A Night at Blackrock Station” is full of sparkling energy and the fun of making fine electronic music. One can already hear this on catchy opener “Flock of Swallows” with its lovely sequence waves and warm, smooth pads. Then, a nod towards TD’s “Das Mädchen auf der Treppe” is imminent on “A woman on the platform” as it spreads its warm sonic aura. Relaxed, melancholic spheres open “02:17 AM”, but soon things head into electronic freestyle with a slight prog-rock edge as the heavy sequences build further and drums, Gert’s e-guitar, and some synth-soloing kick in. Next is the excellent “The night train didn’t stop” -my personal highlight- with its catchy, smooth evolving sequence patterns, warm textures, mellotron pads, and lush piano playing on top. The 12-minute title track rounds out the 62-minute release tastefully with Gert soloing gently over spatial sequencer strings on the first half before some nods of ‘80’s TD and drums set things in motion.

I’m convinced the engaging soundings of the moody “A Night at Blackrock Station”- another winner from the Groove label- will please a large audience without a doubt.

Overall rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars.
