Ryuichi Sugimoto – The Arctic

CD, Polydor Japan, 1989

Here’s another trip down memory lane. I personally recall that Wim van Putten played parts of it on his legendary “LP and CD show” on Dutch radio when the album hit the streets. “The Arctic” contains 37 minutes of elegant music composed by Japanese soundtrack composer and producer Ryuichi Sugimoto for an NHK TV documentary series about the Arctic.

The release, featuring an impeccable sound quality, offers accessible, atmospheric, and melodic/lyrical music along with an occasional dash of orchestral drama. Musically, I’d say the synth-heavy outcome moves between the tender work of Kitaro, Amin Bhatia’s “Interstellar Suite”, and Vangelis’ “Antarctica”.

Soon after this recording, a follow-up saw the light of day: “Arctic II” (which some rate even higher).
