Something Completely Different – The Last Gate
CD, Invisible Shadows, 2003

Due to the big amount of releases in foreign countries I would almost forget their’s also a lot of interesting electronic music produced almost next door. There’s for example this musician Boele Gerkes hailing from Zutphen, The Netherlands, who operates under the monniker Something Completely Different.
I had never heard of him before, but that changed as I saw him perform live at the German EMIL festival in 2003.
Boele belongs to the group of musicians who are capture by the “analogue gear virus”, as he has collected quite a collection over the years while improving his playing skills.

“The Last Gate” is his third album, which contains lots of great sounds, sequencers, and rhythms which vaguely made me think of the approach of Spyra, but with a twist.

The disc features 78 minutes/11 groovy tracks in which one can almost immediately hear the fun the musician must have had composing and playing them.
Especially “Marathon 1”, “Marathon 2”, “Spirit” and “Exponential Distaster” have become personal favorites of mine.

Overall, this is a well produced and executed album to keep in mind.
