“Where All Is Fled” appears to be Steve Hauschildt’s second solo release following his departure from the ambient trio Emeralds. It is a highly emotive collection of dreamy electronica evoking a sense of drifting that seems to transport the listener to another place. Throughout the album’s nearly 70-minute duration, washes of grey-toned melancholy drift gently through the sonic veins of each track, evoking the atmospheric qualities of artists such as Ulrich Schnauss. Warm, slowly enveloping soundscapes and varied synth arpeggios shape lush, transparent and intimate spaces. It is difficult not to be carried away by the atmospheres Hauschildt creates, particularly on tracks such as “Arpeggiare”, “Vicinities”, the vibrant “The World Is Too Much with Us”, and the gentle, soaring and sparkling “Caduceus”. “Lifelike”, appearing near the end of the album, is the only piece that leaves me somewhat puzzled. Here, Hauschildt seems to lose some of the direction and focus that make the rest of the album so compelling. Apart from this minor stumble, “Where All Is Fled” is an immersive and emotionally rich journey through dreamy electronic landscapes. |
