A compelling release and a no-brainer for aficionados of deep-listening drones and ethno-ambient textures, “Terraform” was originally issued as a limited-edition, dvd-sized digipak, complete with three grotto photo prints. In 2009, Projekt Records reissued the album in a standard cd jewel case. “Terraform” marks the first full collaborative release by longtime friends Steve Roach and Loren Nerell, two composers who first met in Los Angeles in 1981. The project began in 2003, shortly after Nerell returned from Indonesia. At the time, Roach was working on the EQ and mastering of Nerell’s album “Taksu” and was impressed by the musical direction Nerell was pursuing. He subsequently suggested that the two should try collaborating on an album of their own. Nerell began by creating a series of sounds in his home studio before spending a week with Roach, working primarily at night in Roach’s legendary Timeroom studio. After that initial period, they made a quick mix of the material and went their separate ways, intending to add a few final elements over the following months. However, life and other commitments intervened, and the project remained unfinished for nearly three years. In 2006, Roach and Nerell finally returned to the material with the intention of completing the mix. What initially appeared to be a straightforward finishing session soon evolved into something much more substantial, as they extensively reworked and reshaped the music. The result is a captivating exercise in sound design that feels simultaneously prehistoric and futuristic. Across four lengthy, immersive compositions, “Terraform” unfolds as an organic, surreal and transformative ambient journey. Its deep drones, subtle ethno-ambient textures and expansive sonic environments reward attentive listening, gradually revealing layers of detail and atmosphere. Meditative without becoming static, the album creates a remarkably deep and otherworldly listening experience that sits comfortably between ambient music, soundscape and experimental electronic composition. |
