The vast amount of releases varying in quality Mr Roach put out in the last two decades didn’t make me want to keep up with that. There are still a few in there that deserve attention, “Portals and Spirals” being one of them. The recording consists of two energetic, highly pulsating, sequencer-driven tracks dressed with gentle melodic synth pads. The two pieces, captured in the moment over two days in Steve’s Timeroom studio, were inspired by over two years of live performances across the US. This time around, an assortment of accelerating sequences and tantalizing celestial winds propel the listener with high speed through a fascinating, constantly shifting and evolving sonic universe that airs Roach’s typical trademarks throughout. Despite these contemporary electronics being created in the here and now, the realm of Berlin School from the old days firmly shines through. The golden days of Mr Roach reappear here, convincing and solid. P.S. The CD edition features a different mix from the vinyl version and contains 20 minutes of extra music. The download contains both the full-length versions as well as the 22-minute track editions of the LP. |
