In uncertain and troubled times, there is something deeply comforting about returning to long-form ambient music — music that quiets the mind and creates room to breathe. “Ascension of Shadows”, subtitled “Meditations For the Millennium”, is a perfect example of such an immersive listening experience. The album originally appeared as a limited collector’s edition: three 74-minute cds housed in a black box, with only 2,000 copies produced. Created in anticipation of the approaching millennium, the music was conceived as a place of solace and retreat. Through real-time performances in Vidna’s home studio, the two musicians combined organic sounds with electronic processing, gradually shaping what they described as a “sonic sanctuary for repose.” The result is a deeply atmospheric work built around a kind of tribal minimalism. Patient, spacious and mesmerizing, the music unfolds slowly, drawing the listener inward rather than demanding attention. Its introspective character makes it particularly suited to solitary listening. I find it works best as a continuous experience, preferably through headphones, allowing the layers and subtle textures to reveal themselves without interruption. In 2005, “Somewhere Else” -originally the first disc of the three-cd set- was reissued separately as a single cd. |
