“Approach” is the debut recording by Greek composer Kostas Katsikas, aka Subheim, whose music I ran into by accident. It offers a peculiar but intriguing mix of ambient, IDM, and downtempo, merging crispy beats/rhythms, piano, drones, female voices, electronics as well as a tad of glitch into a rather cinematographic outcome. There though is a darkening, introvert, saddening as well as quite haunting veil hanging over and found deep inside the album’s engaging music. Senses of isolation, melancholy and despair creep in occasionally, most notably on the beautifully rendered (,4-star tracks) “Away” and “Stranded” or the gentle, ghostly atmospherics of “Hollow”. On top of that comes the emotive track “Voces Perdidas”, dwelling pleasantly in an ethereal, lush aureality. The release rounds out with two, rather stilted, remixes. |
