I missed out quite a bit on the music of Dutchman Dennis Lodewijks in the last few years. With “Other Worlds”, he shows he made a big step forward, still staying close to Vangelis’ sound and his way of composing.

Over two hours of music make up “Other Worlds”, which pairs majestic, highly emotive tracks with melodic, rhythmic-driven, sometimes even poppy pieces. A big, transparent, and deep sound design, lovely bass lines, as well as attentively layered and mixing of sounds are featured all the way and create a most pleasant flow. For me, the evocative, enchanting character of Dennis’ creations -that occasionally line up rather close to the fine output of Frank Van Bogaert- turns out best in the imaginative soundscape-oriented, less-rhythmic recordings. What also pleases me a lot is the lightness and positive tone found throughout.

That said, certain tracks are almost film music, such as the very nice “Turning Point”. Well, taking it all in, I for one very much like the intrinsic warmth, emotive waves and smooth sparkles embedded firmly in and expiring from most of the music, such as “Wastelands”, “A Gentle Touch” and the lovely ambient trip “Biosphere”, all this in favor of a busy, epic piece like “Prey and Predators”. I’d say Mr Lodewijks has done a good job here, congrats to you!
