On lots of 36’s albums, a profound, melancholic, and highly emotive vibe is present to grace the listener’s ears. “Distance as Power”, created between April and May 2020 when our globe was under lockdown, sees Mr Huddleston team up with Japanese sound artist Duenn for this ambient widescreen recording. The five tracks (making up 34 minutes of evocative ambience) contain swirling textural soundscapes and expanding, quite foggy atmospheres fused with sampled vocal pads. Together they form a beautiful, haunting, and desolate sonic environment, all underscored with distinct dwellings of longing, sadness, but also hope and a sense of release. I feel “Distance as Power” makes some lovely ear candy for late-night listening. Chapeau, guys! Verdict: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
