I have a preference for instrumental electronic music, so I had my reservations for this album, on which Ralf Gülpen introduces the (wordless) vocals of Misi Wainwright (spherically interwoven with the instrumentation on four tracks) as well as a saxophone player on the final piece “Vital”. Still the same on the 70-minute “Time Travel” are the continuous tracks as well as TiRa’s minimalist sound design. What I expected turns out, as the dynamic and interplay of singing and electronics doesn’t work for me, which also goes for sax and electronic pads. Fortunately, the 11-track release (thematically focusing on the concept of time as a dimension and sensation, rather than a specific journey to a location) also contains six instrumental pieces. However, these prove a bit noncommittal occasionally to my ears. Although the outcome is not exactly my cup of tea, I’m confident there are quite some fans out there who will be grabbed and/or mesmerized by TiRa’s “Time Travel”…. |
