CD/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Pleasure Sound Music, 2011

Triple S is a new German electronic music project bringing three established musicians together: Max Schiefele (aka Maxxess), Erik Seifert and Cologne-based Joseph Steinbuechel. With Erik Seifert at the helm, one can sense quality is guaranteed, and the content of the 70-minute concept album “Poles” indeed doesn’t.

“Poles” is a well-composed and above all passionate release dedicated to severe cold weather conditions and the explorers who fought it, such as Shackelton. The eight instrumentals tracks nicely merge atmospheric and melodic textures with sequenced electronics and groovy bass lines along Mr Schiefele’s e-guitar work beautifully topping it.

From all offerings, my personal highlights are the two-part “Erebus Ice Tongue” and the gracing sounding “Mount Ellsworth”. Another big plus is the albums sophisticated, detailed and open sound design, spreading out an elegant and smoothly layered sonic canvas that tickles the imagination.

All in all “Poles” makes a worthy companion paying respect to (but at the same time also reflecting the beauty and loneliness found in) vast frozen landscapes.
Recommended.
