Ulrich Schnauss – Goodbye
CD, Independiente Music, 2007

The German musician Ulrich Schnauss, who now has settled down in the UK, definitely has reshuffled the cards for the music on this album. “Goodbye”, his first album in about four years, introduces further songwriting, more vocals (especially those of Judith Beck) and much multi-layered guitars.

As Ulrich states, this third album marks an end to a chapter in sound, as he feels the previous to this album as moving closer to something he wanted to do right from the beginning, but didn’t quite manage. Now, “Goodbye” takes the ideas of merging songwriting and indie elements with electronic music to a maximum.

One can hear Mr Schnauss is still on the steering wheel, as heard on tracks like “Here Today, gone tomorrow”, “In between the years” and “Never be the same”, but things get very rough on “Stars”, while “Medusa” features psychedelic, raging guitar lines and distorted sounds.

The outcome is confusing, at least to my ears. “Goodbye” just doesn’t offer the comfort and easiness as found on his preceding albums.
I can only hope it doesn’t continue that way on any forthcoming music from his hands.
