Various Artists – The Wending Works I

MC, Private Release, 1989

At the end of the ‘80’s, the Belgian EM scene produced a new but short-lived magazine: De Wending. At that time, I was not able to become a member, but I kept an eye on it while I continued reading as well as contributing to the Dutch KLEM fanzine.

Along with the printed magazine, De Wending also released “The Wending Works 1”, a cassette featuring six compositions of upcoming Belgian artists as well as one track by Dutchman Ron Boots. At the time, this tape had unique music, but since then Mr. Boots reused his track on the “Hydrythmix” album he did with Bas Broekhuis. Patrick Kosmos’ track “Moonchild” was the closing piece of his album ‘87 album “Mindscapes” that later became part of “The Chronicles” series. The remainder of the tracks, though, remain unique until today.

Daniël Lemmens’ “Metamorphose” makes a pleasant, moody opener, while the track by Patrick Goethals put me off due to the use of sax. The 17-minute “Saving the Fragment” by Walter Christian Rothe, though, is a great piece of music comprising his typical emotive style and sonic approach with touches of Vangelis. The influence of the latter also shows on Peter Marsch’s highly emotive “When the Night Comes”. Peter Marsh was actually the alter ego of Peter De Backer, also a member of Symbian. De Backer was a big fan of Vangelis and Walter’s, with whom he collaborated in the late ‘80’s on some tapes.

Another atmospheric gem is the 12-minute “Distant Harmonies” by Purfoze, nicely complementing the band’s style, which Mark de Wit and Ruud Rondou developed. The track was actually the encore of their concert at the CC in Strombeek-Bever, one of the band’s first performances.

All in all, this recording is still most enjoyable after so many years.
