The EP “Allogenes” marks the second chapter in Vir Unis’s “Book of Mutations” trilogy, originally released in 2003. Once again, John Strate-Hootman demonstrates his ability to weave the various facets of his musical vision into a cohesive and continuous flow, blending introspective rhythms with atmospheric ambient textures. Spanning 19 minutes, “Allogenes” unfolds as a dramatic ambient piece built around a rich interplay of string textures and subtle sonic layers. Around the six-minute mark, vocal samples by Artemis (aka Oliver Lomax) emerge, adding another dimension to the evolving soundscape. Tribal percussion enters at approximately nine minutes, introducing a welcome rhythmic intensity to the otherwise psychedelic and spacious atmosphere. As the piece progresses, its various sonic elements gradually dissolve into ethereal realms, bringing the journey to a suitably immersive and atmospheric conclusion. |
